of Central Nervous System Vasculitis, Read was diagnosed with a short-term
memory impairment that has affected her ability to find sustainable
employment.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Though Read has been
receiving disability pay and services over the last few years, she has yearned
to find a means to financially support herself.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>However, due to her disability and lack of employment over the last five
years, Read’s job opportunities are limited.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">As a means to achieve financial
stability and get off disability pay, Read created a vision to launch her own
business, showcasing a clothing product that she conceptualized.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The idea was initiated by a personal
experience that Read had on a very hot summer day while in church. Read was
wearing a chic summer dress that she had layered with a t-shirt for modesty,
but found herself hot and sweaty from the added layers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Wishing for a lighter, more breathable, more
feminine and formal alternative—the idea for Essential Under T’s was born.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Read has worked tirelessly for two
years to bring her vision to life and has since designed a product that offers
several unique qualities.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The
cornerstone feature of Read’s product is a short design, which cuts off just
below the chest to avoid un-needed layering over the torso.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Essential Under T’s are also distinguished by
lace trim, a flattering neckline, and added coverage over the shoulders for
strappy dresses and blouses.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">To create the product, Read devoted
hundreds of hours, including a number of personal trips to the Los Angeles
garment district to find an affordable fabric that aligned with her vision.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Nearly a year later, with the help of Read’s
favorite “lace man” Albert, Read found just what she had been looking for!</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Opening
a Mexican Restaurant has been Cayetana Montes’ dream for as long as she can
remember. She owned her own successful, money making cleaning business and
contracted with hotels in Park City, Utah; but that business didn’t quench her
thirst to own her own restaurant. A local bank sent her to see Ken Fakler at
the SBDC at UVU after she approached them to procure a loan to start the restaurant.
That was in November, 2009.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They wanted
her to formalize her business model with a business plan.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Ken helped her with all the details of the
business plan, but she needed a location, in Kamas, Utah - her home town.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>After
a year and a half search, a suitable location became available; and after
reading her business plan, the landlord indicated that they would help her
finance the restaurant.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She invested
$15,000 (her savings) and the landlord loaned her $15,000; <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>and Los Montes Restaurant opened with the help
of her family on July 4, 2011 as an LLC.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>She had overcome the startup challenges of raising money, finding
employees, buying assets at the right price, and marketing to customers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When asked what the secret to her success,
Cayetana reports, “Putting in many long hard hours (she works seven days a
week), good food recipes, and superior customer service.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The rewards of Cayetana being an entrepreneur
and owning her own business, <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>is that she
is her own boss, she loves to please her customers, and the business creates a
bonding experience between her and her family (her entire family works the
business). Part of her marketing success is her involvement in community by
donating gift certificates to the South Summit High School, the local fire department,
and to the local rodeo events. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>Cayetana
is grateful to the Orem SBDC for their direction in helping her write the
business plan to get her loan, helping her interpret the commercial lease on
the building, helping her create a marketing plan, and helping her with all the
details of starting and running the business, even though there were set backs
along the way.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“The Orem SBDC is a big
part of the success of this business; we couldn’t have done it without
them.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">

Each client explained that the company Acklin was working for and the senior partner could not practice what they preached. The clients described the work Acklin had done for them generated revenue and improved their processes, but the company was not willing to take care of its assets. The clients both asked Acklin "How long are you going to put up with this?"Months earlier, in August of 1999, Charles Acklin was approached by two investors, Doctors from Michigan and Pennsylvania, offering him start-up capital if he would consider leaving the partnership and starting his own venture. At the time, he had been uninterested, but after this chance encounter on his ski trip, and three months of attempting to define and improve the partnership with no success, Acklin called up the investors and accepted their offer. Acklin officially resigned his position on October 1, 2000, and started VOLTI on October 31, 2000. VOLTI's mission is to accelerate and increase the success of it's clients. Volti goes into a company as a guest, "embedded" rather than imposed. They learn a company's style, values and traditions, and then the companies needs. Then they go to work for the company, working with teams and individuals in everyday, real-life situations to bring out the needed improvements, employing the proven elements of Volti's program. Volti focuses on the strengths of the present staff to begin creating improvement from the inside. Improvement in people brings improvement in their work, and that brings improvements in company performance. This ends in profit."VOLTI would not be where it is without Ken Fakler. Ken targets issues and goes beyond textbook definitions. He doesn't cheer lead, he facilitates results. Together we clarified propriety elements, infrastructure, our unique business model and sales process. During times of lost funds, negative cash and discouragement, Ken supported me as I refocused and recovered." Fakler has helped stabilize, expand, innovate, and transform VOLTI from a highly successful 'one-man operation' to a team, really taking it to the next level.<br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-1766998680827510052011-11-28T11:20:00.001-08:002011-11-28T11:24:33.808-08:00Sunny Day Preschool & Daycare<div align="right"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 150px; height: 126px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680128800450465058" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7j7vfXvRl_-9b7XiuyTyyaYUd-vzYEYQs5uzV4X2k85x34CaR8nIB-klqJ8HteeswS3WkzPieYChNCP65TQNCH77433rF0IJeiC-DGffhJbRcEf-HfaSYrV9LpmkFeqSE1TRXcKrC8lKQ/s320/Sunny+Day+Preschool.jpg" /></div><div align="left">Ever since Heidi Barker can remember, she wanted to work with children and own her own day care business. When Heidi graduated from college, she started working at the Sunny Day Preschool and Daycare Center in Heber City, Utah. The school had been in existence since 1978, and housed children from 3 months up to 11 years old. Heidi had worked her way up from a teacher to the Director over a period of years.In November 2009,the previous owner decided to sell the business and the house that the Daycare Center was operated from; and she approached Heidi to buy it. The offer was fairly priced, and this was Heidi's chance to own her own business, and buy a house to live in at the same time. She needed to acquire a down payment and she approached the Orem SBDC Center to help her with a business plan to secure a loan.Heidi approached several banks and savings and loans over the next year and a half with her finished business plan, but was turned down. Her credit score was good, but she had no collateral and her income was insufficient to secure a bank loan. Heidi didn't give up - she approached the Utah Micro Enterprise Loan Fund and secured a loan from them; and scrapped together a small amount of cash from friends and relatives to make the down payment for the business only. She then worked a deal with the previous owner to lease the house until she could get a loan for the down payment on the house.On January 3, 2011, she registered the Sunny Day Preschool and Daycare, LLC in her name, retained the four employees, added more children to maximize capacity (she currently has a waiting list of children), updated her license with the State of Utah, and has made a profit ever since.When asked what role the SBDC has played in this, she states, "The Orem SBDC helped me write the business plan, value the business, secure the loan, and negotiate the lease. They made it all possible. When it seemed I would fail, they encouraged me to keep going forward."As a new business owner, Heidi overcame many challenges, like molding the former employees into a cohesive, motivated team, collecting past due invoices, and conforming to the myriad of State regulations.Heidi feels the secret of her success is lots of hard work (13 hour days, 6 days a week) and total "face time" with her employees, the kids, the parents, and the stakeholders. The school is her life and she loves it. Heidi feels the best part of being an entrepreneur and owning her own business is the difference she can make in children's lives. She tells them everyday, "you can overcome all odds - you can do anything you want, just like I did."When Heidi is asked for advice on opening a business, she responds, "Go see the Orem SBDC for help. They will help make your dream come true."</div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">"The Orem SBDC helped me write the business plan, value the business, secure the loan, and negotiate the lease. With high school aged daughters,<br />they started to notice how many dances there are and how expensive the dresses<br />were. They also notice that many of those beautiful dresses hung in closets and<br />the owner didn’t know what to do with them.<br />Now they had an idea for a business they could run together and truly<br />enjoy.<br />Elsha Rae’s Dress Boutique is a formal consignment<br />boutique. The long racks of beautiful<br />formal dresses and four fitting rooms take up most of Angie’s basement at her<br />Mapleton home. After advertising in the fall<br />of 2010 for formals that could be consigned out, they got many responses and<br />even have a dress that was shipped from Hawaii.<br />Jan said that many of the girls didn’t know what consignment meant and<br />they did a lot of explaining. When a<br />girl brings in her formal dress, she names it.<br />Some of the dress names include Neapolitan, Barbie, Jezebel — whatever<br />the girl wants her dress to be named.<br />When the dress rents, the owner gets part of the rental fee.<br />Part of the way Jan and Angie got the word out about the<br />dress shop was through Facebook. When<br />they first opened, they offered a free jewelry rental for anyone who rented a<br />dress and then posted where they rented it on their Facebook page. The social media helped the word spread<br />quickly through the Springville, Mapleton, and Spanish Fork High schools. The word continues to spread wider in to Utah<br />Valley and Elsha Rae’s Dress Boutique has its own Facebook page that highlights<br />girls in dresses and catalogues some of the dresses themselves.<br />They like being in business especially since they can try<br />an idea without having to wait for approval from someone else. Both Angie and Jan are enjoying the<br />challenges of growing their business, and they are glad they have each other to<br />rely on. “I wouldn’t want to do this by<br />myself,” Angie said. They both agree<br />that one of the best parts of their business is seeing the beauty of a girl come<br />shining through because of the beautiful dress she is wearing.<br />Before they got started, they came to the Orem SBDC with<br />questions. “You want to obey all the laws – it was hard to know what all the<br />laws were.” After getting some answers<br />to their questions and doing some homework on what they needed. They<br />transformed Angie’s basement into a dress shop.<br />“We contacted the SBDC at the very beginning,” Angie said. “We couldn’t have done it without them.”<br />As their business continues to grow, they know that the<br />Orem SBDC is there to help. Jan said, “We feel like we can ask people at the<br />SBDC." For those thinking about<br />going into business, Jan offers this advice, “Research, research, research! And<br />go to the SBDC and see Camille.”<br /></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-67892209613974932332011-08-01T10:26:00.000-07:002011-08-01T10:45:03.067-07:00Bonneville School of Sailing<div><div><br /><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCHQoLxJ3oCOEFjUxfcv6_cntY__2LQD605WCftmUTMkHSvpM43J4drYYtHt55H_Xr_dF_tDCClUePbLJ1Y2dQmrAHDcNGzUtnDjvfwuUkll3kFnSoB0J2xBrHTrnyZgWmHsroBTwAZFR7/s1600/DSCN2466.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 240px; height: 320px; float: left; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635940593597667250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCHQoLxJ3oCOEFjUxfcv6_cntY__2LQD605WCftmUTMkHSvpM43J4drYYtHt55H_Xr_dF_tDCClUePbLJ1Y2dQmrAHDcNGzUtnDjvfwuUkll3kFnSoB0J2xBrHTrnyZgWmHsroBTwAZFR7/s320/DSCN2466.jpg" /></a>Bonneville School of Sailing</div><div> </div><div>Todd and Louise started their sailing school in April 0f 2007. Todd had decided to take an early retirement, he had formerly been BYU's Director of the Visual Art's Department. The sailing school was all Louise's idea. They had been brainstorming so many different ideas, but sailing had been a passion for them both. Todd had first started sailing while in Hawaii in '74. He had been part of the coast Guard in the Army, and learned about helicopter maintenance. There were many underlying similarities with how the water and wind functioned with sails as well as wings. In 2007 the ocuple started developing a curriculum. They wanted something that would be interesting as well as solid and useful. It was important to offer sailing classes that were very hands on. </div><div> </div><div>Todd and Louise feel they went about starting the business backwards. They knew what they wanted and went for it. There has been a fair amount of stress involved, but it has been so rewarding. Working for yourself, you can go further than being under an owner. It has been hard to take risks, since neither Todd or Louise were ever risk takers. But the excitement of accomplishing a goal and broadening the business are so great, and especially when done for yourself.</div><div> </div><div>Todd and Louise say their secret to success is really held in prayer. "Heavenly Father really has made this happen for us. We work hard and do our part, but believe that miracles happen. We are not born business people, but after working and praying at something we have had the right ideas and customers come that we need to further our business success. Heavenly Father helps us step by step by letting us gain the knowledge to run the business as the need provides itself."</div><div> </div><div>Todd and Louise first started coming to the Orem SBDC in August of 2008. "Thanks to the Small Business outfit, we have a wonderful classroom. It's been such a blessing. In the past, we have gone to the Chamber of Commerce and magazine's for space and advertising and it was not helpful. Ken Fakler has encouraged us and given us ideas. From pointint us in the direction of a web page to helping succeed. When discouraged, Ken kept encouraging us and offering more classes to further our education. He has helped us get organized and always knows what to do with employees and advertising. The SBDC also helped greatly getting marketing research and a business ready."</div><div> </div><div>Todd and Louise feel the best part about being an entrepreneur is the excitement of accomplishing things and seeing results happen. There is a lot on the line, and physical demands can no longer be met the same as they were at a younger age, but when you can't quit, you keep on pushing. They are now working on expanding their business to teach classes for kids that are at risk. They recently acquired a boat that used to belong to Roy Disney. It is an ocean racer named "Morning Light". As part of the program for the children that teaches responsibility an dpride, the kids will be learning to make a sail, paint, work on the diesel engine and find out all the details that make it work, all while practicing math and physics to learn how to sail the boat. Todd and Louise feel that courses like this can be very beneficial to kids, and are so hands on that they really hold their attention.</div><div> </div><div>They have also been very involved in the community. They are active members on the Utah Lake Commission Board. This committee has developed courses for fourth graders teaching them about sailing and endangered species that live in and around Utah Lake. They teach the kids about safet issues and how pollution affects the area. They also have programs to draw in youth and couples such as sunset cruises, as well as team building programs that are offered for businesses around the area. Bonneville School of Sailing started out as an idea and a fantasy, and has grown to be a blooming business that is such a wonderful addition to our community.</div><div> </div><div>Bonneville School of Sailing, LLC</div><div>Todd and Louise Frye<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJY4V7x8IAHe0U6uRbn8jIUZdHUUgC_nUrIOOJV-aU-r6CSXjYLjpDaiYVncu4_WDqxci49ca1fDBFVBaICzVsAmHi96ICqAxEvtTyGaM2WZw2frAD4DQQQC4SER5xndmWYX_QHKeO-kAu/s1600/bonneville+sailing+logo.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; width: 97px; height: 77px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635944319685078738" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJY4V7x8IAHe0U6uRbn8jIUZdHUUgC_nUrIOOJV-aU-r6CSXjYLjpDaiYVncu4_WDqxci49ca1fDBFVBaICzVsAmHi96ICqAxEvtTyGaM2WZw2frAD4DQQQC4SER5xndmWYX_QHKeO-kAu/s320/bonneville+sailing+logo.jpg" /></a></div><div>801-636-5204</div><div><a href="http://www.bonnevillesailing.com">www.bonnevillesailing.com</a></div><div> </div><div> </div></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-79356108221400032042010-07-09T10:15:00.001-07:002010-07-09T10:21:15.911-07:00Goodies Cake and Candy Making Supply<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfnSBIcgHveSobkP0StXI8oRuvA5lBQ-pDQgjWLBwj4UKXWDHFx8qMUUifCwMp_ZsnZ-ZV-FtxXZRleT0pyjpaIkGOX_wlU9VOkR3sNWh6p05ZwIbheUkapgXnhHX3fD5ndRzmIlSOj1se/s1600/DSCN1582.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 240px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491957593964317554" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfnSBIcgHveSobkP0StXI8oRuvA5lBQ-pDQgjWLBwj4UKXWDHFx8qMUUifCwMp_ZsnZ-ZV-FtxXZRleT0pyjpaIkGOX_wlU9VOkR3sNWh6p05ZwIbheUkapgXnhHX3fD5ndRzmIlSOj1se/s320/DSCN1582.jpg" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghuKrGeNi0nQbh8CeeFKrTx3PNXsPnSb72CknmGt3YgiOU-07grRqa4vD4yLZ5ie1oIp4O2d3OIycM1XaHTAYbG8ox15Apom5aePc7KyrUsaGbNtJ_EeahAm1NSdo6eKFoGprgYqTVhpBG/s1600/DSCN1582.jpg"></a><br /><br /><div><div><div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">Goodies Cake Decorating and Candy Making Supplies<br />Denise Ferrell<br />151 North Main Street<br />Spanish Fork, UT 84660 </div><br /><div align="left"></div><div align="left">Goodies in Spanish Fork is a perfect example of how businesses need to constantly be changing with the times. Denise Ferrell originally started her business in Arizona in the early 90’s. At that point in time scented candles that looked and smelled like desserts were the biggest rave. Denise was very successful, but after moving to Utah decided to discontinue the candle business. On September 9, 2009, Denise reopened her candle business on quaint Main Street in Spanish Fork. This time, she had a small corner of the store dedicated to cake and candy making. All September, she only made $250 in sales, all from friends and family, and only from the cake/candy corner. She knew it was time to revamp.<br />On October 29, 2009 Denise reopened her doors as ‘Goodies,’ this time focusing on cake and candy making. Sales went up over 10 fold with this change in both November and December. But Denise had a problem, she only had enough new inventory to cover the small front room of her store, and did not have enough money to order new items. She knew she had to act, and fast, or her business would go under.<br />In February of 2010 Denise rediscovered the Small Business Development Center. She started working with Ken Fakler who was ‘instrumental’ to her success. He pointed her in the direction of the Mountainland Revolving Loan Fund as well as the Utah Micro Loan Fund. The Orem team coached Denise through her fast pitch and business plan, getting her ready for D-Day (meeting with the board members.) Initially, board members thought that Denise was stretching herself to thin and were not interested in lending her the money. Ken encouraged them to go home and see if their wives would be interested in such a store. Thanks to the wives and Ken pressing for an extra board survey, Denise was able to get the start-up money she needed from the two lenders. This happiest of days happened on March 20, 2010.<br />Denise held a grand re-opening on April 17. The store had completely changed and is now filled with candy and cake supplies. Sales have sky rocketed and keep rising every month. Denise opened the store in September as the sole employee. By her grand re-opening she obtained 3 part time employees, and with her rapid growth will be hiring on one more full time person at the beginning of fall. Denise stocks her shelves not with items she thinks will sell, but through taking constant suggestions she carries what her customers want. Just recently she added a new product called the ‘sugar veil’ an airy thin substance that is flexible and can take almost any shape. After working in several florist shops over the years, Emily knew she had style, skill, customer service charisma, and good relationships with vendors. Though a few years had past since then, Emily had been looking forward to the time where she could start her own florist business.</div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">The time was right in 2009. At her first <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">SBDC</span> appointment, Emily started the process to become a legal business entity. She had been looking for equipment and wanted to get things in place. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">Emily</span> and her husband live in Eagle Mountain City, and she knew that a large community of families lived miles away from a floral shop. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-error">Lehi</span> had the closest florist and Emily was convinced there was a market just waiting to be served. She now comes in to the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">SBDC</span> to brainstorm marketing ideas and research target markets. He has owned a variety of businesses since he was 18. His previous business ventures included huge overhead costs, such as used car dealerships, where he was generating up to $10 million in sales a year, operating costs were close to $9.9 million. Jose came to Utah with his family from the east coast. After losing $400,000 in a business deal, with nothing but the shirt on his back and the will to work hard to build a successful business.<br /> Jose started his company, CDL Training, in Orem in March 2009. He came to the Orem SBDC in January 2009, for guidance in setting aggressive goals to run his company. The ocean of knowledge at the Orem SBDC was priceless. Jose was looking for structure and organization – the SBDC helped him attain that for his company. Jose considers that to be a foundation of his business, “Because if you don’t know where you are going, how do you know when you get there?” He says that “the monthly meetings are helpful to keep him on track”. Just eight months into the life of CDL Training, Bentura is 100% debt free, a first in his many business ventures. Ironically, in the worst economy, he is doing better than ever before.<br /> Bentura recognizes that the bumps in the road from his previous businesses has been good experience, and he has learned from his mistakes. His keys to success are low maintenance, low overhead, and low expenses. He delegates well and is able to employ 2 to 4 employees while training anywhere from 5 to 50 students to certify for their CDL. His niche is the Hispanic market. While other companies turn these folks away, Bentura’s staff is bilingual and able to train them. His first priority is to give and create opportunities for his students. He not only helps them in a one-on-one program to get CDL certified, going at the individual’s pace; but after certification he assists his students with job placement. The program is 3 to 4 weeks long, and after that, his students can often triple their prior annual salary as truck drivers. Also, Bentura is now assisting his students in starting their own trucking businesses. He helps them find semi trucks for their own company and sends them to the SBDC for further business help.<br /> Bentura advertises through Spanish radio, TV, print, word of mouth, and ads on his vehicles. He has found the internet marketing and SEO classes offered by the Orem SBDC center to be tremendously helpful in getting him more business. He runs his business out of the UVU incubators so his students have a store front to pick up applications, a space for a receptionist that is always available, and a place to study if needed. He started his business with one truck and a rented trailer, and has since grown to 3 trucks and a bus in the 8 short months since he opened. He has already graduated 110 students from his program; and has recently expanded to a location in West Valley City and hopes to soon open 5 more locations in Seattle, Wyoming, Denver, Idaho and Las Vegas. With his success spreading like wildfire what Jose really needs to concentrate on now is taking a few days off.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-461170857387088922009-10-09T12:31:00.000-07:002009-10-09T12:33:16.044-07:00How to Survive the Recession Storm<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOlZxOickZnObpLdy6nbQgo5AfQn2f2Ekr9oFNToNkqyqUAgKo7g89RCgisEwkM4suHjhPC93PnVIo2Zh51klphI2Apl_uhqyBCwP6hPFhl3C2-8q4m6YCKmQtB2HvQjN3DOWTkO-kI9Nb/s1600-h/ksl.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390685545665175602" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 151px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOlZxOickZnObpLdy6nbQgo5AfQn2f2Ekr9oFNToNkqyqUAgKo7g89RCgisEwkM4suHjhPC93PnVIo2Zh51klphI2Apl_uhqyBCwP6hPFhl3C2-8q4m6YCKmQtB2HvQjN3DOWTkO-kI9Nb/s200/ksl.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8gzV_NbPTxXnlxVD7ViCdenzc6q7-h3zKIFsfMTZfg_wYLSoSnSTypqQ8RgKFjG5_w8272o7S51bGIcYa1FrbOonbJewnMo4wTt7mDb3y41ZvDDfYSDra7l4AQhS8jOTDMtLS4thus_TR/s1600-h/poster.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390685397685689986" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8gzV_NbPTxXnlxVD7ViCdenzc6q7-h3zKIFsfMTZfg_wYLSoSnSTypqQ8RgKFjG5_w8272o7S51bGIcYa1FrbOonbJewnMo4wTt7mDb3y41ZvDDfYSDra7l4AQhS8jOTDMtLS4thus_TR/s200/poster.jpg" border="0" /></a> Recession survival 101: Hotel owners get firsthand lesson<br />October 7th, 2009 @ 2:17pm<br />By Becky Bruce<br />LAYTON -- Hotel owners and managers in Utah are learning how to survive the recession. It's a big topic of discussion at the Utah Hotel and Lodging Association Convention in Layton this week.<br />Managing Director of the Utah Valley University Small Business Development Center Ken Fakler told people at the conference they didn't have to lose money.<br />He said, "It's up to the management people, it's up to the owners, whether they're going to survive this or whether the ship's going to sink."<br />Fakler said a lot of expenses were negotiable, even if they didn't seem like they should be. The reason? Your business insurance company or landlord would much rather get a lower rate from you than no rate at all.<br />"Every expense item on the income statement is negotiable," Fakler said.<br /><a href="http://www.ksl.com/emedia/slc/1484/148492/14849254.jpg"></a><br />Marynika Miche, a counselor at the Small Business Development Center, agreed. She also added that you have to scrutinize every expense to make sure employees aren't taking advantage of you in the recession. In particular, she cautioned about abuse of company gas cards.<br />"It's petty theft," Miche said. "They don't consider it stealing. But with fuel prices going up, it's been significant for the employees and the employers."<br />Fakler warned about employees misrepresenting workers' compensation claims, either because they can't afford health insurance or their co-pays. He suggested businesses make sure every claim their insurance company handles really results from an injury on the job to avoid facing higher rates.<br />Fakler said regardless of which cost-saving measures a hotel or other business took, the important thing was not to wait.<br />"You've got to make really tough decisions right now, immediately," he stressed. "You've got to cut your expenses, yet you've still got to give superior, magnificent customer service."<br />You can learn more about UVU's program for small businesses <a href="http://www.uvu.edu/sbdc/">here</a>, and the Utah Hotel and Lodging Association <a href="http://www.uhla.org/">here</a>.<br /><br /><div></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-79974133201157736322009-09-01T11:21:00.000-07:002009-09-01T11:23:40.812-07:00Bee Safe Systems<div align="left"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCCaXfyeRnuTBsxAElwjQ59NoZ7KHAiW6M9WzDkBNCUZ5nzsHIAkb1Ls7V8DEWKMkW0QjmK_OZN-pXJnZYB-nrXLzuDa40iMdWStlHhNxBeQGi1BeKJkVqnbVcS75f1t1uMEb2t_dhuO6U/s1600-h/DSCN0959.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376566290946905618" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCCaXfyeRnuTBsxAElwjQ59NoZ7KHAiW6M9WzDkBNCUZ5nzsHIAkb1Ls7V8DEWKMkW0QjmK_OZN-pXJnZYB-nrXLzuDa40iMdWStlHhNxBeQGi1BeKJkVqnbVcS75f1t1uMEb2t_dhuO6U/s200/DSCN0959.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">Bee Safe Systems, LLP<br />Bonnie and Terri Snow<br />795 W Center Street #2<br />Provo, Utah 84601 </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"><br />In 2002, during a family graduation party, seven-year-old Virginia Graeme Baker was out swimming in the families private pool and hot tub. Her sister ran to get her mom because something was very wrong. Nancy Baker jumped into the hot tub trying to pull her daughter free of the drain, but she was no match for the suction force of the drain. Two men took over and broke the drain in order to release Virginia’s body. The child was rushed to the hospital but was dead on arrival. Nancy Baker, in the midst of her grieving, consulted her father-in-law, James Baker III, White House Chief of Staff for President’s Reagan and Bush, to pass a law about anti-entrapment drain covers. The Virginia Graeme Pool and Spa Safety Act was passed in 2007, requiring all public pools to have proper anti-entrapment drain covers in place by December 2008. Many public pools across the country have closed for the summer of 2009 because they did not have the means and funding to put in place an approved anti-entrapment drain cover. Other pools that have been caught without proper security have received a $5000 a day fine until the facility is fixed or closed.<br />In 2005, Bonnie Snow and her daughter Teri read about the accident and thought this would be a possible invention to tackle. They spent many afternoons discussing possible solutions to such a problem. In 2006, Bonnie was doing an inspection for Utah County and fell into an insecure sewer drainage that collapsed. Breaking her back and destroying her knees. She was on bed rest for months. One day, Teri told her to start researching their idea more. Together, they thought of a contraption that would save lives. Thinking of a design like a bee-hive, with strong tubular joints, they started inventing a device.<br />In October 2007, Bonnie and Teri started coming in to see Ken Fakler. Ken pointed them towards many helpful resources such as Internet Marketing and QuickBooks classes, assistance with taxes, and people they would be able to make contacts with for developing their product. Of all the sources that Bonnie and Teri tapped into, Ken never steered them wrong. Ken also believed in them and never let them give up. After months of testing that failed on their product and wanting to stop, Ken kept pushing them forward. After two times of failed testing through the ISOD machine that checked plastic standing against UV Rays, Ken pushed them forward and explained that the testing might be faulty. Bonnie and Teri went back to find out that even ISOD created plastic could not withstand the testing. With this new knowledge, ISOD readjusted their scale and temperatures and Bee Safe Systems passed. The specialized plastics had to pass food grade plastics tests, strength tests, stretch tests, and many others. Bonnie found a company called Georgia Gulf to make the plastic. This company was so excited by Bonnie’s product, that they even helped fund the testing.<br />In March 2009 the product finally passed all the testing. By April 2009 the Snow’s made their first massive sale of $100,000. Sales continued strong throughout May, June and July. They just received another major order in Logan under Utah Plastics for August. Just recently, they received a letter from the Director of Health in Tennessee saying that he was so excited about their product that he has mailed their brochure to all public pools in Tennessee along with their yearly license safety renewals. Canada has just passed a similar law and they are planning to advertise their next.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-11491795134923529972009-07-23T09:33:00.000-07:002009-07-23T09:36:22.376-07:00Sole Envy<div align="left"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju9cdBEExawnFalxZe5k2SKHiZVi492NC2LAbq-Nm3IEr8fEF7MCvF7SgNF0M2ZcguJm_byEIVcpZUShBDmfdRA7dEDoIg82022ttX0QPskDbf-aupjcS5RFvzmBdFZI-Ao618FJX5cZCV/s1600-h/sole+envy+front.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5361695209093239698" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju9cdBEExawnFalxZe5k2SKHiZVi492NC2LAbq-Nm3IEr8fEF7MCvF7SgNF0M2ZcguJm_byEIVcpZUShBDmfdRA7dEDoIg82022ttX0QPskDbf-aupjcS5RFvzmBdFZI-Ao618FJX5cZCV/s200/sole+envy+front.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div align="left">Sole Envy<br />Laura Felt<br />1200 Town Centre Blvd #1142<br />Provo, UT 84601</div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left"> </div><br /><br />Laura started out working in Claire’s Boutique as a retail manager. She enjoyed her position, but wanted to go to law school. Once she stopped working retail she realized how much she missed it. She knew what she really wanted was her own retail store. Laura had married into an entrepreneurial family and she and her husband dreamed about opening their own retail place. One day, while driving around, they decided that it was time to stop talking about their dream and start living it. They started researching the Provo Towne Centre to see what was missing from the mall. They decided that there really was not enough reasonably priced shoe stores. The only competition around was Famous Footwear.<br />Laura dove into research and decided she wanted to stay within a moderate price of $17-$24 per shoe pair. She looked into chic companies such as SODA, Cupid and Wild Diva. Laura scoped out the competition, camping out in front of other small retailers, finding out just what were the desirable and less desirable traits of each place. She decided she wanted to own a place that was shopper friendly with great customer service. She wanted to have well trained and helpful employees but also make it easy for customers to help themselves.<br />It wasn’t always easy for Laura to be successful. She came to Ken Fakler needing help to get a business loan. With the way the economy was heading, no bank was willing to finance a 22-year-old wanting to open a shoe store. Ken pointed Laura in the direction of Zion’s Bank as well as private investors and he helped her get a business plan together that won over both bank and investors.<br />Laura’s next hurdle was the Mall lease. The bank and mall could not come to an agreement about a lease plan. The Mall’s rules were that they can kick out anyone the first 90 days if you do not meet your goals. Once an agreement was finally reached and the Mall saw what a success Laura’s store was, she received invitations to franchise and spread throughout the Ggp (a mall organization that is in charge of 669 malls nationwide).<br />Before Laura opened her store she hired a designer to help with the store layout. She decided to keep everything at eye level, with deep enough shelves that all the sizes were available on the floor. She went with long mirrors on the walls that made the space look bigger. Laura chose furniture from IKEA, so that it looked modern and yet very inviting. She also spent hours making her window displays unique and eye catching. The result was the Sole Envy of the mall.<br />Even with the current economic downturn, Laura’s store has been recession proof. Within her first four months of business she was able to reach 62% above her projected sales. The sales were thousands of dollars above her projected monthly goals. Part of what makes Sole Envy such a success is that people always need shoes, and this is a lower priced, yet chic option. Another success maker for Laura is that she puts her employees first. She makes sure that her employees are very well trained and customer oriented. In return for their excellent service she is willing to help them out with their college education. Laura has been able to accomplish all of this at the young age of 22 and as a new mom, thanks to her dedication, the strong support of her family and the SBDC.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-45754796968933926152008-10-01T10:36:00.000-07:002008-10-01T10:41:55.077-07:00Downtown Philly Cheese Steak<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhODg2viOtj-NnSizNTCznXoxRqKRt632BP1LZ1Un6X7Rxd52154lYDuv_qoRMB6Z_zRd2mO1DgRiFRvDBl15opOBzmMf5m-axKP80tP45aGq9njl35cz5_BRXOVKnWukltVQ4tD7_UutQ7/s1600-h/IMG_0005.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252242105775582050" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhODg2viOtj-NnSizNTCznXoxRqKRt632BP1LZ1Un6X7Rxd52154lYDuv_qoRMB6Z_zRd2mO1DgRiFRvDBl15opOBzmMf5m-axKP80tP45aGq9njl35cz5_BRXOVKnWukltVQ4tD7_UutQ7/s200/IMG_0005.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivlX-OX8kr0D-mh2YGQtjX_nEj1IjOJK-aQfRqG357Sc9o34ybhyphenhyphenpThNPSvAICZLU5bUlujwQ6dUAf2YPu9VrmiNjbYSS7lxtUKMwiAZw7usBokS2_I2KERGkLhsbkd5aU-nsOphjaNDlM/s1600-h/IMG_0005.JPG"></a><br /><br /><div>The Downtown Philly Cheese Steak<br />Matt Hassler and Nick Rhodes<br />1665 West Towne Center Drive<br />South Jordan, Utah 84095<br />801.878.8450</div><br /><br /><div>The “right” cheese is the Cheez Whiz. The City of Philadelphia is known for their delicious Philly Cheese Steaks, Tasty Cakes, and Birch Beer. If you are a Philly native, or happened to live in the surrounding area, giving up these delicatessens is just too hard. This is what Matt Hassler experienced. Matt spent two and a half years in a sales job in Philly and got addicted to these wonderful foods.<br />When Matt moved to Utah he met Nick Rhodes. They were both salesmen for a company, and both of them knew that their true calling was in the food industry- both of them realized that they would like to attend Culinary School. They decided to start their own Philly Cheese Steak House- and that is how the ‘The Downtown Philly Cheesesteaks’ idea came into existence.<br />Matt found the Small Business Development Center four years ago, but shelved his business ideas due to lack of funding. They decided to give the SBDC another try, and this time found Ken Fakler. They bounced idea after idea off from Fakler, and received many helpful answers. They found out what to expect in a lease, how to set up a business, and they received valuable information fast. They were able to find a good location with heavy foot traffic and tender an offer on needed equipment. The building was ready to open, without needing a build out. Ken sat down with Matt and Nick and checked over their lease before they signed.<br />A big challenge they faced was financing. Most SBA Loans were not structured for new business startups. They would need access to a quarter million dollars in assets to apply for the loan as a new business, and they just didn’t have that kind of money. They ended up fronting their own money by borrowing on their own houses and credit cards. Their goals was to make a substantial profit in the first year, and they are well on their way to reaching that goal. Also, they are planning to open a second store in the Salt Lake area this year; and eventually have 5 stores in the greater Salt Lake area.<br />Matt and Nick make the ‘Best Philly Cheese Steaks in Utah’ and couldn’t have done it without their very supportive wives – their wives quit their jobs and are working in the business. Matt believes that “People should open their own business” because “it is so rewarding to work for yourself”. He has “learned more in the last 3 months about business than in taking business classes for many years and reading business books.”<br />The Downtown Philly Cheese Steak provides a true Philadelphia atmosphere when you walk through the door and authentic Philadelphia food. Their most popular subs are the traditional steak which is filled with steak, fried onions, and cheez whiz or American cheese; and the Garlic Steak which is filled with steaming steak, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, garlic butter, provolone and cream cheese. It makes your mouth water just reading about them! Matt, Nick, and their wives are making their dreams come true with the help of the Orem SBDC. See the SBDC to help you make your dreams come true, too.</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-50332483939445304732008-08-20T09:33:00.000-07:002008-08-20T09:44:42.056-07:00Stephanie and Christian Nielson's Plane Crash<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfHrf9JezF7J1mjmL0pLx3nVO8grgroy_9Ps24DaLqtG87AcIxVQ8S9VE2BkeXLNxzoMB4hyLXQshnXX1y9s620x8NMpOWOq1gGEw4JgL_fe9npeoJUvPcNpGJ3myWrWNtOa4RyhuKFNse/s1600-h/Nielson+Family.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5236640914390671490" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfHrf9JezF7J1mjmL0pLx3nVO8grgroy_9Ps24DaLqtG87AcIxVQ8S9VE2BkeXLNxzoMB4hyLXQshnXX1y9s620x8NMpOWOq1gGEw4JgL_fe9npeoJUvPcNpGJ3myWrWNtOa4RyhuKFNse/s400/Nielson+Family.jpg" border="0" /></a>A woman originally from Provo is one of three people involved in a fiery plane crash in Arizona. The victim's parents are well connected to Utah politics. The woman and her husband are now in a burn unit in a Phoenix hospital.<br />Stephanie Nielson grew up in Provo. Her father is Stephen Clark, a member of the Utah House of Representatives, while her mother Cynthia is on the Provo City Council. And even though she lives in Arizona, Stephanie keeps in touch with a lot of people here locally, through her blog, which has become very popular.<br />Stephanie's blog, the NieNie Dialogues, is now asking for prayers. Both she and her husband, Christian, were critically injured Saturday night in a plane crash in St. John's, Ariz.<br />Doug Kinneard, a flight instructor also on board the small plane, died in the crash, while Christian and Stephanie suffered severe burns.<br />Cynthia said, "It looked a lot worse than what we anticipated, it was shocking actually."<br />Family members say the Nielsons are no longer considered trauma patients, but they are sedated much of the time because of the pain from their burns. When they are conscious, family members try to give them encouragement and talk about their interests. "We talk to them about BYU Cougars football," Cynthia said.<br />Aviation has been a longtime interest for Christian Nielson, and he recently earned his pilot's license. The couple have four children, and the family has had many flights together, with many photos posted on Stephanie's blog.<br />Family members are now caring for the couple's children at their home in Mesa. While both Christian and Stephanie face a long road to recovery, their family is holding onto hope. "Everyone has a lot of faith, and we know the Lord will intervene one way or the other," Clark said.<br />It is still unclear who was at the controls of the plane when it went down and what may have caused the plane to crash, but an investigation is underway.<br /><br />To get more information please go to <a href="http://cjanerun.com/">cjanerun.com</a> where the family is posting updates.<br /><br />There has been a fund set up of Stephanie and Christian, whose recovery will cost in the millions. There are so many beautiful lakes and reserves in this desert; and what better way to spend a day with the family than relaxing on the water in the sun or skiing behind a speeding boat. Kevin Myers grew up with boats around him. As a kid he worked in his dad’s and uncle’s business named Eagle Marine. His goal was to own his own place someday, and that dream came true in 2001 when Eagle Marine closed its doors. Kevin purchased all the inventory and tools from Eagle Marine when it closed, and started his business working out of a garage. He named his business Jones Mobile Marine Service, Inc. He quickly realized that the purchased inventory contained many boat parts manufactured from 1950-1990 parts that are not manufactured any more parts that a boat owner will pay a good price just to find them. This is one of Kevin’s distinct competitive advantages.<br /></div><div align="left">Kevin’s start-up year was difficult- because of Kevin’s youth and lack of credit history, banks were unwilling to loan him money. Also, the garage he worked out of was too small for working space and storage. As a result Kevin transformed into a mobile boat service and would work on the boats at the customer’s home. This was difficult, time consuming, inefficient, and expensive for the boat owner. Kevin needed money for a shop location large enough to service multiple boats and store parts. He had his wife Carly contacted Ken Fakler at the Orem Small Business Development Center. Ken helped him create a business plan that resulted in a loan from a local bank. Also, Ken helped him locate a building and forge an acceptable lease with the landlord. The result was that the new efficient business has resulted in a doubling of sales each of the three years he has been in business; the need to purchase a larger building to keep the business growing; and the hiring of his father (who has years of experience) to keep an acceptable turnaround time on contracted work.<br /></div><div align="left">The rising price of gas has not affected Kevin’s business. His sales are still climbing and he is still booked one to two weeks out for work. He has added a new service where he picks up and delivers boats to customers; this helps to lock people into doing business with him. When Kevin purchases that new building, he hopes to start selling a line of small fishing boats and will expand his boat trailer services, boat detailing services, and his parts offerings. Also the expansion will help them maintain their personal, attentive service with his customers. Kevin knows what service really means.<br /></div><div align="left">With the help of the Orem SBDC, Kevin and Carly are making their dream come true. In passing, Carly just had their second child; nothing like another good family business to make America the most economically advanced country in the history of the world! </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-9520856905986712552008-06-19T10:57:00.000-07:002008-12-09T09:13:37.402-08:00June Success Story: Flirty Aprons<div align="center">Flirty Aprons, LLC</div><div align="center">575 East University Parkway</div><div align="center">Orem, Utah 84058</div><div align="center"><a href="http://www.flirtyaprons.com/">http://www.flirtyaprons.com/</a></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbUyC3fIpNEAf52wdhyQT9Qg72Thr79yv77RWKaFkYVxWpHQKpJN8_NrjGHUkLfqEn0gh13TjFNY2qVrL-an1vs8bLWXhMt4XQ3FeKTwGtVeXg9nPws2buQQqK9VKgFlF-lj0HgZu_XTVZ/s1600-h/DSCN0132.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213654814385303682" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbUyC3fIpNEAf52wdhyQT9Qg72Thr79yv77RWKaFkYVxWpHQKpJN8_NrjGHUkLfqEn0gh13TjFNY2qVrL-an1vs8bLWXhMt4XQ3FeKTwGtVeXg9nPws2buQQqK9VKgFlF-lj0HgZu_XTVZ/s320/DSCN0132.JPG" border="0" /></a> Flirty Aprons began as a concept on Mother’s Day 2007. Jamie Taylor was looking for an apron for her mother on Mother’s Day, and found nothing that was remotely appealing. So she started her first sewing project, and created her own apron. Then, in December of 2007, Jamie met Heather Hansen, who was in training to replace her at her current position. The ladies started talking; and together with their husbands, Spencer and Joseph, decided to start a business together. The two couples put together ten business ideas each, and from these forty ideas - they chose to sell aprons. They considered this idea to be the quickest way to raise money for a larger venture. Little did they know, they had stumbled upon a business that would grow very quickly and become their “large venture.”<br /> Throughout the startup phase of the business, the Taylors and Hansens ran into several unexpected hiccups. Finding a manufacturer was difficult, until they found a fabulous one that was right in their backyard - someone that was close enough to supervise and make sure the design was being printed and made as desired. The next obstacle was getting funding. After being turned down by numerous banks, they discovered America First. At the time, Joseph and Heather Hansen were also going through a home purchase and America First assisted them with both loans. Unfortunately they had to first get approved for the home loan, and only then were they able to apply for the business loan. This delayed the opening date slightly, but they finally obtained their first business loan.<br /> Joseph had previously found the Small Business Development Center online while exploring the possibility of starting a gym in the Alpine area. He had taken the ‘Internet Marketing’ and ‘Start Smart’ classes at the Orem Small Business Development Center and learned a great deal from those classes. Then he met with Ken Fakler about the ‘Flirty Apron’ concept. When Ken introduced him to the SBDC Joseph said, “this is a hidden gem no one knows about.” Spencer said that “Ken has given a lot of advice. He has helped shape the company, given us direction, and been so encouraging.” The Hansen’s and Taylor’s also read the book ‘The E-Myth Revisited.’ This book has been a guideline for them as they’ve started. It has shown them that having a business model rather than just being self employed is the key to success.<br /> Flirty Aprons was expected to be a small side business for these families. They were hoping to sell a few aprons to stores like Bed, Bath and Beyond. However, after opening their first store in March 2008, they quickly discovered, that flirty attractive aprons was a concept that no one had tapped. They found that it was not just a local need, but a concept that had worldwide appeal - one that was worth expediting. Within the first three months of opening ‘Flirty Aprons’ their actual sales tripled over their projected sales. Furthermore, within a two week period the company earned enough capital to pay off all start up costs. Their beta test was a resounding success and taught them many valuable lessons to expand to the next level. They are now preparing to open a second location in mid July, 2008. They are also expanding their website and setting up their distribution network from which they hope to go nationwide, soon. A simple household need has turned into the venture of a lifetime- what a ride for four more entrepreneurs.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-32029660811162749052008-06-19T10:26:00.000-07:002008-12-09T09:13:37.594-08:00May Success Story: Gloria's Little Italy<div align="center">Gloria's Little Italy</div><div align="center">Owner: Gloria Bonfanti</div><div align="center">279 East 300 South</div><div align="center">Provo, Utah</div><div align="center">801.805.4913</div><div align="center"><a href="http://www.gloriaslittleitaly.com/">http://www.gloriaslittleitaly.com/</a></div><div align="center"></div><div align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG0qJWy4xQgN5LVbSSi7W_zP335H8_ehwPj_ffU3kNoqYk3qs6btShxcZDg6nXbxi78Dsj4mGHxfC7Zmt1a7lesklUytsXqYQGRQo8qkX8L6ohWh7xi4-7IxW1GqeAUe7V-kGIOzawWEX6/s1600-h/Gloria's+Little+Italy7.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5213652329864958114" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG0qJWy4xQgN5LVbSSi7W_zP335H8_ehwPj_ffU3kNoqYk3qs6btShxcZDg6nXbxi78Dsj4mGHxfC7Zmt1a7lesklUytsXqYQGRQo8qkX8L6ohWh7xi4-7IxW1GqeAUe7V-kGIOzawWEX6/s320/Gloria's+Little+Italy7.JPG" border="0" /></a> <div align="left"><br />Gloria Bonfanti grew up on the Marina Di Pisa Coast in Italy. Her family has been in the restaurant business for three generations. Her grandfather owned many restaurants in the area; and her father, in turn, growing up with thirteen brothers and sisters, started up his own restaurant on the Pisa Coast. Growing up, Gloria learned her dad’s different recipes and experimented with them on her own. Gloria moved to the United States eleven years ago with her family, and settled in Utah. She always had an urge to start her own restaurant.<br />Nine years ago, Gloria took a cake decorating class at BYU. She began working at BYU in their catering department, and then began catering parties on her own. At this time, she found a great location for her own restaurant, but she only had one week to sign the lease, she passed because the timing wasn’t right. She feared the overwhelming thought of owning her own business in a foreign country, and the time commitment that would take her away from her three small children. Over the next six years, while catering for others, people would constantly ask her why she didn’t start her own business. There was no real authentic Italian food available in the county, and the dream of owning her own restaurant kept recurring to her.<br />Gloria and her family again started looking for a location to open a ‘trattoria’ or small family styled restaurant. It was important for her to use authentic Italian meat and cheese, as well as gelato. Gloria investigated several different locations. She was interested in a location in Riverwoods Mall, and other outdoor malls; but the banks would not loan her enough money to start. Then Gloria stumbled onto the small building in Provo that she had fallen in love with six years before. The building was available again, and the bank loans finally went through. The only stumbling block this time was that the landlord of the business had little faith in Gloria’s business model. They felt that Gloria did not have enough experience to succeed, but they still accepted the rent money and Gloria readied the building to launch.<br />At the same time, Gloria’s eldest daughter, Letizia, was attending BYU. She heard of the SBDC in one of her classes, and they signed up for an appointment to meet with Ken Fakler. Ken assisted them in writing a well established business plan, and confirmed his confidence in Gloria, her family, and her dream. Gloria says, “Ken pushed me and gave me confidence to do it. He is a nice man, hard working, knows how to do his job.” Ken assisted with the Business Plan and proforma budgets for 3 years; and finally they were able to get the business running.<br />Gloria and her family visited the local restaurants to compare prices and services of the competition. She found suppliers to import fresh meat and cheeses from Italy; and found the correct ingredients to make the perfect Gelato. Gloria’s dream of eleven years had finally become a reality. Gloria has one hint that she would like to give anyone starting a new business, “Have one goal you want to do in your life- and do it! That one opportunity is so great and you have a blessing. If you will use your talent you will be successful in life, in spirit, and financially.”<br />Gloria involves her whole family in the business. All three children ranging from 13 to 25 years old and her husband, Mauro, take full responsibility in running the family restaurant. Their future plans are to expand to another location serving quick deli sandwiches and desserts to go. But for now they are happy with their lovely ‘trattoria’ and deli.</div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-79705378553615189302008-05-08T07:41:00.000-07:002008-07-08T07:42:04.504-07:00Law's Lawn Care<div align="center"><a name="_Toc194721650"><strong>Law’s Lawn Care</strong></a></div><br />The key to success for Law’s Lawn Care has been customer service, customer service, customer service. Ryann Law, company founder and president says the growth his business has experience has come primarily from “wearing himself out” in making sure the company’s customers are happy with the service they receive. In the beginning, Ryann understood that it was important, with this type of company, to contact and connect with his customers in a meaningful way. With his gregarious personality and instant smile, Ryann quickly gained the trust and respect of his client base. His initial marketing strategy of door-to-door contacting is proving to be tremendously successful. <br /><br />Law’s Lawn Care also has found success as they’ve established personal relationships with all of their clients. This type of relationship goes far beyond typical lawn care company services. For instance, Ryann and his company keep detailed records of each client they serve and whenever possible employees are encouraged to address the client by name when communicating with them. The company also encourages employees to “go the extra mile” by asking clients for their specific preferences in regards to the services they receive. These two strategies have significantly set this company apart from their competition. <br /><br />Law’s Lawn Care funding has come from self funds. Initially, Ryann agonized over the option to self fund. However, after a few months of being in business, the company’s profits grew substantially. It was then that Ryann knew this funding method would be a success. The first six months of company revenues were $14,500 which the company used to purchase additional equipment. This equipment allowed Law’s Lawn Care to expand their service offering and shortly thereafter they hired their first employee. <br /><br />As far as the future goes, Law’s Lawn Care continues to develop company strategies based on their core competency - customer service. Future company plans include aggressive growth tactics designed to transition Law’s Lawn Care into a large competitor in the lawn care and landscaping industry. As for the short term, company goals include: hiring two maintenance crews to keep up with company demand, doubling their revenue stream, and allowing the founder and president, Ryann Law, to refocus his efforts on future planning and business strategies. <br /><br />The Orem SBDC has been instrumental in the success of Law’s Lawn Care. The Center has assisted Ryann with Marketing Strategies, Training Classes, Employee Regulations, and Tax Consulting. With this joint partnership Ryann Law knows he has the keys to ensure his business success.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2402679970647187791.post-69628784748965865782008-05-08T07:35:00.000-07:002008-07-08T07:41:29.808-07:00Katumba's Day Spa & Salon<div align="center"><strong></strong></div><div align="center"><a name="_Toc194721649"><strong>Katumba’s Day Spa & Salon</strong></a></div><div align="left"><br />“Katumba is derived from an old South Pacific word meaning beautiful. My father served there in World War II. He later named his cabinet making business Katumba’s. In honor of my father I have carried on his name to my business in hopes to give you the same breath taking service he gave to his clients. My name is Floralyn and Katumba’s Day Spa and Salon is a dream I have had since I became a Cosmetologist. I worked at the same salon for 13 years and didn’t feel like I was providing my clients everything I had to offer. After several years my husband and friends finally convinced me that I had the potential to start a salon that would be beautiful and successful. Katumba’s was founded on the idea that everyone has the ability to do whatever they put their mind to.”<br /><br />When Floralyn Martinez first came into the Orem Small Business Development Center and told us about her dream, we were very anxious to assist her. Floralyn’s determination and stick-to-itiveness impressed us. There were many challenges to overcome as Floralyn began the process of starting her business. The first major obstacle was funding. As a result of some difficult personal financial hardships Floralyn and her husband had declared bankruptcy several years before and no bank was willing to fund them. However, with the assistance of the Orem SBDC Floralyn was able to successfully obtain two local economic development loans. The $40,000 she received from these loans carried her through the startup phase of her business.<br /><br />The Orem Small Business Development Center also helped Floralyn with her financial projections. This included estimating her startup costs, inventory costs, monthly sales, and working capital. Once her projections were complete the center helped her write her business plan, which included multiple revisions for her different funding partners.<br /><br />Since that time, Floralyn says she has learned many important aspects of being a business owner. She has learned that:<br />1. Everything is more expensive then you think it is going to be.<br />2. You have to keep a positive perspective on everything you do in the business.<br />3. As a business owner you need to build a good support team to assist you.<br /><br />Part of Floralyn’s support team has been the Orem SBDC. When asked about her experience with the Orem SBDC Floralyn said, “Ken made me feel like I was on top of the world and that I could do anything. I also felt at peace with him immediately. The Orem SBDC has a relaxing office environment. So as a client, I didn’t feel intimidated. Ken never let me get discouraged and he is always so positive. When you start getting discouraged he tackles the issues behind the discouragement and you work together to find solutions.”</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="center"> </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
